The Aztec had raised ducks, geese and turkey which were only available for rich nobles and merchants. They also had dogs but did not use work animal, plows or any other vehicle with wheels. They used pointed sticks to make holes for playing seeds in the soft soil and a wooden hoe for tending and harvesting crops.
When the Aztec realised they needed more farmland but there was none on the island, they had crated farmland with a brand new agricultural technique. This was known was chinampas or floating gardens. These chinampas are used on particularly swampy but nutrient full ground of mainly around their biggest city, Tenochtitlan and also in the lake of Texcoco. Chinampas are built by staking out plots on the lake bed and then having a fence woven around the stakes, and finally filling in the fence area with mud and vegetation. The next rectangle of chinampas would be parallel to this one with a room for a canal in between allowing for a method of transportation through the chinampas system. One technique they used to further stabilize the fence around the surrounding plots would be to plant willows alongside the canals of the chinampas. The canals were important as they offered both irrigation and good.
